Editing and Copy Editing

I am currently the copy editor at Frontiers magazine; based in Los Angeles and distributed around Northern and Southern California, it is one the oldest gay magazines in the United States, covering news, politics, arts and entertainment, lifestyles, and gay L.A. In addition to normal copy editing and proofreading, my duties there include helping assemble and maintain the style guide (based mostly on AP style, but with some Chicago-style interpolations) and doing some minor work in QuarkXPress.

While it existed, I was the managing copy editor at the LA Innuendo, a humor and satire magazine focusing on Los Angeles and the entertainment industry. Edited by Richard Rushfield (Vanity Fair) and Stacey Grenrock Woods (Esquire, The Daily Show), it included contributions from (among others) Craig Anton, Tim Bagley, Andy Kindler, Pamela Ribon, Michael Sonnenschein, and Paul F. Tompkins. The style guide was wholly mine to establish (very much in line with Chicago style), and I got some great exposure to good comic writing--it was an excellent opportunity to learn some of the techniques (other than being funny) that make humorous writing work.
